Ester & Norman Walter Memorial Nature Trail

Dedicated on October 22, 2015, The Esther and Walter Norman Memorial Nature Trail is a one-mile trail located on Red House Hill. The Walters shared a lifelong love & commitment to conserving nature. They originally purchased the land in 1951 to start a farm where they raised beef cattle, grew crops, and raised chickens for eggs, which soon became their full-time occupation. They explored the area as bird watchers and wildlife potographers, embracing their love of the outdoors. Prior to World War II, Norman was a glass cutter at Libbey-Owens-Ford, while Esther was a bridge Engineer for the West Virginia Division of Highways. The land was donated to Putnam County Parks & Recreation by Martha Somers and Mary Creager, Daughters of Ester & Norman Walter for the purpose of brning a new trail to the community.
