Esther & Norman Walter Memorial Hiking Trail

Dedicated on October 22nd, 2015 The Esther and Norman Walter Memorial Nature Trail is a one-mile trail located on Red House Hill. Walters shared a lifelong love of, and a commitment to, conserving nature. They originally purchased the land in 1951 to start a farm where they raised beef cattle, grew crops, and raised chickens for eggs, which became their primary occupation. They explored the area as bird watchers and wildlife photographers, embracing their love of the outdoors. Prior to World War II, Norman was a glass cutter at Libbey-Owens-Ford, while Esther was a bridge engineer for the West Virginia Division of Highways. The land was donated to the Putnam County Parks and Recreation by Martha Somers and Mary Creager, Daughters of Esther and Norman Walter for the purpose of creating the trail.
